British National Formulary (BNF) and BNF for Children (BNFC) overview

This essential reference provides up-to-date, practical guidance on prescribing, dispensing, and administering medicines.

The BNF details medicines prescribed in the UK, with special reference to their uses, cautions, contra-indications, side-effects, doses and relative costs.

It enables healthcare professionals to maximise the benefits of drug treatment and minimise the risks, while encouraging good compliance with treatment.

Updated every six months, the BNF evaluates clinical evidence from diverse sources. The information is validated by a network of clinical experts and is published under the authority of a Joint Formulary Committee. The BNF reflects current best practice as well as legal and professional guidelines relating to the use of medicines.

These pages aim to help you use the BNF, and tell you a little more about its features.

ALSO AVAILABLE: BNF FOR CHILDREN

BNF for Children (BNFC) provides essential practical information to all healthcare professionals involved in the prescribing, dispensing, monitoring, and administration of medicines to children.

It encourages the safe, effective, and appropriate use of medicines for the management of childhood conditions.

Information in BNFC has been validated against emerging evidence, best practice guidelines, and advice from a network of clinical experts. The text is published under the authority of a Paediatric Formulary Committee.

As many medicines are not licensed for use in children, BNFC includes authoritative advice on licensed as well as unlicensed and off-label use of medicines for children from birth up to the age of 18 years. It is available in print, PDA and online as part of MedicinesComplete. For further information visit MedicinesComplete.
