Chloramphenicol
Chloramphenicol 1% eye ointment reclassified from POM to P for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, for adults and children aged 2 years and over. It is used at night if drops are used during the day, or 3–4 times daily if used alone. Side-effects, contraindications and cautions are as for the eye drops. Storage is at room temperature. Although the shelf-life once opened is 28 days, patients should be advised to discard the tube at the end of the 5 day course. Jun 07

Head lice 210 Efficacy and resistance In an assessor blinded, randomised, controlled, parallel group trial involving 58 children and 15 adults with active head louse infestation, dimeticone 4% lotion was found significantly superior to malathion 0.5% liquid, in both worst case, intention to treat and per protocol analyses.1
