I Welcome
Welcome to the July BNF eNewsletter.
Three new drug monographs have been added to the BNF in the last month, including - emtricitabine with tenofovir alafenamide, elvitegravir with cobicistat, emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, and emtricitabine with rilpivirine and tenofovir alafenamide. We have included dose changes for fenofibrate in renal impairment.

This issue highlights new guidance on pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV infection, low back pain and sciatica, as well as updated guidance on constipation, interactions with contraceptives, diabetes, prescribing in renal impairment and influenza vaccination for winter 2017-2018. We also have MHRA advice on finasteride: rare reports of depression and suicidal thoughts.

This month take a look at our BNF case study on Crohn's disease and the treatment options available.
Kind regards,
BNF Team

I Forthcoming changes for BNF and MedicinesComplete
As users of BNF Publications we would like to inform you of some important developments taking place with BNF and BNFC over the coming months. We will be sending detailed information about each of these areas separately, so keep an eye out for those that are most relevant to your practice.
We've listened to your feedback around ways that we could improve BNF interactions and, as a result, we have redeveloped the interactions content. The improvements also reflect changes in how interactions are studied and the regulatory framework that surrounds this.

In the coming months we will introduce the following content improvements:

Increased coverage and a greater focus on the clinical relevance of the interactions
A consistent style and terminology across all BNF Publications
A new grading system for both the severity of the interaction and the evidence to support it.

If you would like more information on the coming changes please visit the BNF website.
BNF content moved to a digital-first structure in 2015 to allow the development of bespoke digital products, such as the recently released new BNF app. On MedicinesComplete this provided users with a drug and treatment-centric view of BNF content.

To help users become familiar with the change, we have ensured users had access to both legacy and current formats. A high adoption rate of the current structure, the withdrawal of the legacy content from NICE Evidence in June 2017, and the forthcoming retirement of the NICE app means that we are now retiring this version.

MedicinesComplete will retire legacy content in Oct 2017 and replace this with the legacy hierarchy for any users who wish to view the previous chapter structure.
As part of our continued investment in MedicinesComplete we are working behind the scenes in developing new features and functionality for our users. In the coming months, we will be introducing an updated registration process providing NHS users access to BNF and BNF for Children on MedicinesComplete.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information and in the coming months we will be updating you with further information on these developments as well as bringing news and information about BNF Publications.
